Orval - The Fish and the Ring

A bit of trivia to start the day...

The esteemed Trappist ale Orval brewed at the Abbaye Notre-Dame d'Orval has for its a logo a fish holding a ring in its mouth. This symbolic logo comes from the following tale: Matilda of Tuscany (1046-1115) was on a walk one day when she managed to lose her wedding ring in a spring, given to her by her deceased husband Godfrey IV ("the hunchback"), Duke of lower Lorraine. She prayed to find the ring and lo and behold, a trout surfaced holding the ring aloft in its mouth. She proclaimed the place blessed and to be a "val d'or" or "golden valley" and subsequently provided the funding for the foundation of an abbey. The same spring provides the liquor (brewing water) which is the base of the beer.
