REVIEW #17: Shipyard Export Ale (Shipyard Brewing Co.)

Pours an enticing burnished copper colour with a short-lasting white head. Biscuit and sugary, summer-fruit aroma. Malt, grain and faint citrus-tartness. Finishes with a bramble fruitiness. Lager-like in some aspects (despite being an ale) probably due to the inclusion of the German noble hop Tettnang, giving a spicy, earthy, refreshing edge to the beer.

Shipyard Brewing Co. began in 1992 in Kennebunk, Maine. Export was one of their inaugural brews and has stuck around since. It can be classed as a pale ale or more specifically an American blonde ale: this style is an offspring of the American craft movement and features malty, soft-fruit accents and includes the use of noble hops. These beers are often modelled on or inspired by the Cologne speciality, Kölsch.
  • MALTS: 2-ROW PALE, CRYSTAL
  • HOPS: CASCADE, WILLAMETTE, TETTNANG
  • IBU: ?
  • ABV: 5.1%
